Amazon Error 8542: Product ID Matches Multiple ASINs
Error 8542 is the confused sibling of 8541. Your product ID — UPC, EAN, ISBN — matches two or more existing ASINs, and Amazon refuses to guess which product you actually sell. This happens more than it should, because the same barcode can end up on multiple catalog entries over the years: duplicate listings, catalog merges that never happened, or recycled barcodes.
The fix: stop identifying by barcode, identify by ASIN
- Find all the ASINs your barcode matches. Search the UPC/EAN in Seller Central's Add a Product — it lists every catalog entry tied to that code. The processing report may also name the competing ASINs.
- Pick the ASIN that is genuinely your product. Compare brand, title, images, package quantity. If several entries describe the same real-world product, choose the one with the sales rank and reviews — that's the canonical entry buyers see.
- Relist against that ASIN directly. In your flat file, set
product_id_typetoASIN, put the chosen ASIN inproduct_id, and submit offer data only — SKU, condition, price, quantity. Skip the catalog attributes (brand, title, description): providing them re-opens the conflict that 8541/8542 exist to flag. - Re-upload and verify. Check the processing report, then confirm your offer appears on the intended detail page.
If none of the matching ASINs is your product — your barcode was hijacked or recycled — don't force it. Verify your GS1 registration, gather evidence (GS1 certificate, product photos, packaging), and open a Seller Support case under Catalog. Re-uploading the same file just reprints the same error.
Why this keeps happening to the same sellers
- Third-party barcode packs. Cheap UPCs bought outside GS1 are often recycled from expired registrations — they arrive pre-attached to someone else's history. This is the root cause behind most chronic 8541/8542 cases.
- Duplicate catalog entries. Two sellers created near-identical listings for the same product years ago. You can request a catalog merge through Seller Support once your offer is live on one of them.
- Variation families split by region. The same EAN listed separately on .com and .co.uk with diverging data — an upload that syncs marketplaces then trips over the difference.
Multiple errors across hundreds of rows?
Upload your processing report to FlatFileFix — it groups every 8541/8542 by root cause, shows which ASINs are competing for each barcode, and generates the corrected rows. Diagnosis is free.
